CONCEPT
This program will explore the history of transportation in early America, especially the Erie Canal in New York State, and how it affected commerce. It will do this by exploring the case of one company on the canal route, the Hotchkiss Essential Oil Company. The topics of math, science, and art will be explored during the lesson.
OBJECTIVES
• Students will explore the history of trade and commerce along the Erie Canal in 19th century New York.
• Students will engage in math, science and arts related activities during the videoconference that will enhance their understanding of the impact of the canal on businesses.
